When I began photographing more than forty years ago, I was inspired by a world still rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. By the end of the twentieth century—by the close of the millennium—much of that diversity had begun to dissolve, reshaped and often erased by the forces of globalization.
It was in response to this loss that, over the past twenty years, I devoted my work to exploring the edges of the humanized world: places where life still unfolded in a pre-globalized state. These were the world’s last frontiers—natural borders, where existence remained governed by the power of the environment and ancient rhythms of survival; and artificial, political borders, shaped by history, conflict, and centuries of human tension.
In these marginal spaces, humanity persists in forms that resist uniformity. Last Frontiers is a visual exploration of those fragile thresholds where culture, environment, and history still define daily life.
