A Photographic Journey
In the winter of 1992, Andrea Pistolesi and Guido Zurlino set out on a journey that deliberately departed from the classic American road-trip narrative. While the traditional route led from east to west—toward the warmth and promise of California—their direction was reversed.
They traveled from north to south along the oldest road in North America: Route 1, or US Highway 1. Stretching from the Canadian border to the southernmost point of Florida, Key West, the road traces the entire Atlantic coast, crossing cities, small towns, and shifting landscapes.
Thirty years later, US Highway 1 stands as both a celebration and a reflection. It revisits a way of practicing travel reportage that has largely disappeared, while offering a portrait of a nation profoundly transformed—seen through the lens of a journey that moved against the current, and through time itself.
